Tucker Carlson admitted to being “basically a dick” in a text message exchange with a journalist.
In reports Insider’s Mattathias Schwartz posted on Twitter on Wednesday, the former Fox News personality responded to a question about a potential run for president by saying he will announce his campaign “Friday in New Hampshire.”
When Schwartz asked if he could call Carlson to break the story, Carlson admitted he was “totally kidding.”
Karlsson, who admitted he lied on air, apologized and added: “I can never control myself. I’m basically a jerk. My apologies.”
“It’s all right,” Schwartz replied. “I can appreciate a good troll. So you’ve completely ruled out 2024, it sounds like.”
In a later tweet, Schwartz suggested that Carlson’s hope “was that we would accept it and print it based on one text.”
“But I don’t know that,” he added.
Carlson was reportedly fired from Fox last month for reasons that remain unknown. He himself has not talked about running for the White House, although many commentators have suggested he could face Republican front-runner Donald Trump.
