Fox News reporter Jackie Heinrich got into trouble Wednesday when he asked White House press secretary Karin Jean-Pierre for comment on the PGA Tour’s merger with LIV Golf. (Watch the video below.)
Biden administration officials have repeatedly avoided addressing the issue. Earlier this week, the president responded to an inquiry by taking a golf swing and joking, “I plan on playing in the PGA.”
But Heinrich hit her.
She pressed Jean-Pierre on why the White House would not comment, and Pierre repeatedly pushed back.
“We will not comment on him because he is a private person. We were consistent,” she said.
Heinrich noted that Jean-Pierre has confirmed that Biden was briefed on the stunning golf deal, so why wouldn’t he have anything to say?
“We were consistent. He is the president of the United States. He gets to know everything that happens in the world and in the country, right? This is important for him to know. He’s — he’s one of the leaders of the free world,” Jean-Pierre said.
Heinrich continued, asking if it was typical to inquire about private business, and was interrupted one last time.
“I answered your question,” said Jean-Pierre. “We keep going ahead.”
Heinrich noted in his report that the administration has previously commented on moves by private businesses, such as Twitter.
The merger, announced Tuesday, reverberated far beyond the world of sports. The PGA has been accused of partnering with a splinter golf chain backed by Saudi Arabia, a nation that produced most of the 9/11 hijackers who are said to have had ties to Saudi officials. And some lawmakers believe the alliance could violate antitrust rules on monopolies, in addition to allowing the Gulf nation to “sport” its human rights abuses. They called on the Justice Department to investigate.
