Not only HBO TV adaptation keep hers Sony PlayStation shattering excellence of the source material, the exciting series dives into the post-apocalyptic universe of The Last of Us in ways that will delight and surprise even hardcore gaming fans.
The show that premiering on Sunday On HBO Max, takes place in a ravaged world after a fungal brain infection has turned much of the population into feral cannibals. Grumpy smuggler Joel must escort unruly teenager Ellie across the US for slightly spoilery reasons.
It’s a fascinating journey that will leave you in awe and terror in equal measure Game of Thrones graduates Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsay infusing vulnerability and humanity into this charismatic duo at every turn.
This story opens with Joel as society crumbles in the horrific early days of the outbreak, cleverly setting its emotional stakes early on, which mirrors the gameplay closely. Pascal, in a nuanced performance, exudes pain at a crucial moment of loss, but also displays compelling determination and hints of whimsy.
Dark world
Flashing forward 20 years, we are introduced to a world where the survivors live in authoritarian quarantine zones run by the crude remnants of the US military. Their rule is threatened by an unpredictable rebel group known as the Fireflies, with marauders and infected roaming the land.
The show is full of imagery that adds to its world story.
HBO
It’s fascinating to explore, if a little overwhelming. The early episodes are peppered with flashbacks revealing the origins of the outbreak, an element that was not in the game. Co-authors Craig Mazin (creator of Chernobyl on HBO) and Neil Druckman (creative director of the game series) added this story to give newcomers a solid foundationbut it will undoubtedly engage the players as well.
Pascal adds layers of world-weariness to his performance as we return to a hardened Joel who has done whatever it takes to survive over the years. He reluctantly takes on the mission with Ellie, with the chemistry between Pascal and Ramsay emerging gradually as the show patiently builds a relationship between them.
Ramsey’s performance unfolds more gradually, showing more dramatic color as we learn more about Ellie and her sense of wonder becomes apparent. It’s electrifying to watch the impressionable teenager learn from Joel and the other survivors he meets on his journey, especially when the focus shifts to Ellie in later episodes.
Cordyceps infection mirrors the imagery seen in the games.
HBO
The infected are used sparingly, but stick to their in-game appearances and exude danger in every encounter. Some of the visual and sound effects weren’t finished in the episodes HBO sent to print before their release, but these scenes were gorgeously shot and are likely to be extremely effective.
Joy in the dark
Crucially, the bleak post-apocalypse odyssey is peppered with moments of levity and hope – provided mostly by the curious and defiant Ellie. They’re usually followed by reminders that they’re trapped in a hellish world, but you’ll definitely join in when they first laugh together.
Most of the season’s nine episodes focus on this core dynamic, but it also takes a few surprising detours to tell more standalone stories. These stories reveal how the characters find a place for tenderness and happiness in the midst of horror.

One of them dives into the life of rugged survivor Bill, p Parks and recreation areas an actor Nick Offerman anchoring an installment that proves to be the season’s most soulful and haunting. It greatly expands a storyline that is only hinted at in the game and stands as a perfect piece of episodic storytelling. You might need to lie down for a bit after watching this.
The second of these will be familiar to fans of the games, revealing a formative moment in Ellie’s past. Ramsay’s dynamic with a character played by Storm Reid (seen in HBO’s Euphoria)even if an ominous cloud hangs over every moment.
Music by original game composer Gustavo Santaolalla adds a wistful sadness to the narrative, while several pop and rock tracks hint at the world that once was.
Beyond the game
Fans will be happy to see that the adaptation largely stays true to the events of the first game, but there are a few clever additions to Ellie and Joel’s main mission. Yellow jacketsMelanie Lynskey lends quiet menace to new villain Kathleen, her presence adding a new element to the game’s familiar plot.
The show also takes time to reveal never-before-seen moments that will make game fans’ jaws drop, along with countless subtle visual easter eggs and a sprinkling of clever cameos.
In contrast, Scott Shepherd (from Breaking Bad sequel to the movie El Camino) appears in subsequent episodes as a villain that gamers will surely remember. His charismatic performance anchors a story that sticks extremely close to one of the game’s late chapters.
HBO’s The Last of Us is an absolute triumph, offering one of the most intense and engaging narratives in gaming to TV viewers and revealing exciting new aspects of the universe to those who have played the games. It’s beautifully written and the casting is impeccable, with Pascal, Ramsay and their co-stars adding layers of emotional depth and disturbing moral grayness to every moment.
Video game adaptations have a new gold standard (sorry Sonic). Roll yourself out Part 2.
