Unknown parties have been concocting rumors that the Binance CEO is linked to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) with the help of ChatGPT, based on reports from May 1.
ChatGPT info source from fake pages
According to Fortune, an unknown source spread misinformation to various parties, including congressional offices. Subsequently, these parties wrote to Binance and asked if its CEO, Changpeng Zhao, maintains relations with CCP.
Their requests cited a chat from ChatGPT as evidence of Zhao CCP connections. Eventually, Binance was able to reproduce the conversation in question, and Binance CSR Patrick Hellman shared the logs of the conversation on Twitter.
Hillman ChatGPT log It specifically claims that Zhao was a committee member of the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) Youth League in the 1990s. This record also indicates that Zhao worked as a software developer for CNPC.
ChatGPT cited the URLs as proof of its claims. One URL points to a non-existent LinkedIn page that does not match Zhao’s official profile. The other URL refers to a Forbes URL titled “Crypto King, Meet the Crypto Crusader with [a] A $700 Million War Fund”, credited to former Forbes author Pamela Ambler but not extant.
“We can’t find any evidence of it [the Forbes] Hillman wrote on his Twitter account for the events.
Zhao’s actual LinkedIn profile does not indicate that he worked for CNPC. It also does not include his employment history prior to 2001.
Binance’s Chinese ties were previously in question
Binance has previously been targeted with similar accusations. In September 2022, Zhao denied accusations that Binance CEO Guangjing Chen was an agent of the Chinese government. He also said that Binance is not listed in China.
Subsequently, on March 29, 2023, the Financial Times published an article indicating that Binance hid its presence in China after it obtained internal Binance documents. Zhao similarly denied these allegations, though he did not make any specific counterpoints.
However, today’s incident is new due to the fact that AI was the main source of the rumors. Hillman admitted that “bad actors” will abuse AI, as with any new technology.
He also noted that Binance itself uses artificial intelligence for its own constructive purposes — in line with statements made by Zhao himself earlier this year.
