Amazon said Saturday that the first episode of its “Lord of the Rings: Episodes of Power” series drew more than 25 million viewers globally on its first day, making it the biggest-ever appearance of a show on Prime Video.
The series is based on the supplements to JRR Tolkien’s books “Lord of the Rings” and is the most expensive TV series ever.
“It is somewhat fitting that Tolkien’s stories – among the most popular of all time, and what many consider the true origin of the fantasy genre – led us to this moment of pride,” said Jennifer Salk, president of Amazon Studios, in a statement.
At the series’ UK premiere, billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos hinted at how valuable the series was to fans, saying that one of his sons told him “don’t do this” when he learned of Amazon’s acquisition of the rights to the story.
Episodes of the show will continue to appear weekly on Amazon Prime.
Earlier this month, HBO said that “House of the Dragon,” a Game of Thrones series, was the series’ biggest premiere in its history.
Clarification: This story has been updated to reflect that “Rings of Power” is based on the “Lord of the Rings” supplements.
